It is free to enter the complex but to visit individual schools it is ¥400 each. Beautiful hidden gardens.

Many of the quotes seen around the temple are written by the head monk. He is often there and will autograph or personalize what you buy!! A great souvenir!

Visited early in day and there were few crowds. Enjoyed being able to enjoy the peaceful spaces in peace. Excellent public bathrooms too.

臨済宗大徳寺派の大本山で山号は龍宝山。開創は正中2年 (1325年) 開山は宗峰妙超、開基は赤松則村。後醍醐天皇から勅額を賜り、五山の一となったが、後にその位を辞し在野的寺格を保つ。応仁の乱で焼失したが、堺の豪商の帰依を得て一休宗純が再建。国宝の唐門は聚楽第の遺構と伝えられる。多数の塔頭があり境内も非常に広く有名な茶室・茶庭が多いが、非公開の塔頭も多い。

【国宝】登録は「大徳寺・方丈及び玄関」と「大徳寺唐門」…「玄関」は豪商・後藤益勝の寄進で建てられたもので、開祖・大燈国師（宗峰妙超）300年遠忌を記念して新築されたもの。「方丈」は元来は住職の居室を指したが、後に住持の居間は別所に移転され、朝廷の勅使や幕府役人の接待や宗教行事などに用いられる空間となった。「唐門」は近世初頭の四脚門。切妻造、檜皮葺。前後軒唐破風付のいわゆる向唐門。

　鎌倉時代末期の正和４年（１３１５）に大燈国師宗峰妙超禅師が開創。室町時代には応仁の乱で荒廃したが、一休和尚が復興。桃山時代には豊臣秀吉が織田信長の葬儀を営み、信長の菩提を弔うために総見院を建立、併せて寺領を寄進、それを契機に戦国武将の塔頭建立が相次ぎ隆盛を極めた。勅使門から山門、仏殿、法堂（いずれも重文）、方丈（国宝）と南北に並び、その他いわゆる七堂伽藍が完備する。
