Be Careful of the sketchy scammers that stand at the entrance to the train station asking for your "ticket" and whisking you off to the train while asking for insane tips for their "help"

If all soft sleeper tickets are sold, a high chance that travel agencies still have them, for a higher price of course. A hotel across the street (or any other) can quickly order tickets for you.

beware the rigged meters in the early mornings (even if they tell you it's by the meter). this is one of the few occasions that I will say to set the price before you board.

Get your train tickets right here. No agent needed, as there is a ticketing system for the queue and the staff speaks English.

For the most part, seems like people use the ticketing system (now?). Someone came up right next to me while I was wrapping up my transaction and the agent ignored him. Cash only, bring your passport.

If you're heading to Sapa on the overnight train, KEEP YOUR TICKET. They will collect it when you arrive, after you disembark from the train, at the exit gate.

Our hotel advised us in case no one picks us up at the station if train arrives very early(5am) to take a cab outside the station and set the price to 70k VND to old quarter b4 getting on.

We paid exactly 20k VND metered Mai Linh taxi fare yesterday from the middle of the Old Quarter. Paying something like 70k (for 2 km anywhere in Vietnam) is either laziness and/or blatant ignorance.

Baggage can be stored here with a fee. You have to walk to the tourist information counter and "negotiate" a price to store your luggage.

For Sa Pa, avoid the overpriced tourist "trains" (=just wagons attached to regular VN Railway train). The VN Rail wagons are fine simple 4 berth sleepers. The ride is 8hrs, bring your own food/drinks.

When you take a number to the ticket office,dont wait for your turn.Local people never respect numbers,and ladies in offices mostly skip few numbers in line.Just go and fight for a ticket immediately

Buy tickets to Sapa from the counter no. 1. Don't bother to use ticketing system and wait for your turn. Just go and fight for it! ;-)

DO NOT get on those taxi outside of the station as many of them have fixed meters or will take you all over the places to scam money from you!

1 chốn nhốn nháo, lộn nhộn kinh dị! Gửi xe cộ, hàng hoá ở trạm kính ngay cạnh Lotteria đảm bảo & làm ăn tử tế hơn. Rất nhiều người bị cò chỉ sang bên trái, toàn bọn lừa đảo!
