Absolutely picturesque World Heritage Site, I recommend getting here when they open at 8:30am to avoid crowds and after taking a few snaps get on line for the first 9:30am tour of Phoenix Hall

very classic and unique architectural style. Best example of Jodoshu (pure land) buddhism.

At the moment the main hall is under construction til march 2014. I think it is still worth the 300 yen as they are displaying parts of the hall that you would normally not be able to see.

天台宗・浄土宗系の単立寺院で山号は朝日山、開山は明尊。藤原道長の別荘であったものを永承7年 (1052年) 道長の子頼通が寺に改め、翌年阿弥陀堂 (鳳凰堂) を建立。阿弥陀堂や堂内にある定朝作の阿弥陀如来像、52体の雲中供養菩薩等は国宝。梵鐘は日本三名鐘の一つで、10円玉でお馴染み。平成6年 (1994年)【古都京都の文化財】の一つとしてユネスコ世界遺産 (文化遺産) に登録されている。

平等院の藤は5月～6月が見頃。GWに行くのがちょうどいいかもです^^ (ただ、GWはかなりの行列ができるので朝のうちに行かないときついかもです。)

御朱印は2箇所。不動堂:阿弥陀如来、浄土院:鳳凰堂順番はどちらが先でも良いそうです。

内部拝観は9時前から行列。御朱印も受けられます。大阪からなら宇治・伏見1dayパスがお得。
