I've been here a few times and it's still my fave museum in Sacramento. It's a lot of fun because the scenes are very wellconstructed and you can interact with many of them as well!
If you have small kids invest in the caboose club. $25 for the year, child and adult free every visit and free train rides in the summer! Great air conditioning when it's to hot to be outdoors.
Sleeper car was amazing as they rock the car so its like being on an actual moving train. You can try to operate a high speed train simulator on 2nd floor!
There was so much more than I expected. The train cars were fabulous! There was more with every turn and you could either board them or look in the windows. I had never seen a post office car.

If you park at k street mall you can get three hours free parking with validation and the hourly rate is a lot less than the old sacgarages. There is a nice tunnel that goes right under the freeway.
The California State Railroad Museum retells the history of the railroad, and has 21 restored locomotives and other railcars, including a Pullman-style sleeping car and a Railway Post Office.
When visiting The Railroad museum stop bye RiverCity Saloon next door. Free wi-fi, cheap drinks, and don't forget to say hi to the mayor, he is a bartender there!
