Instead of taking the expensive and crowded elevator, just walk up to Largo do Carmo and take the small path next to the church. That way you'll be able to see one of Lisboa main attractions for free!

The soldiers are kind of pleasantly lacklustre. Sort of like the cast from that Carry On Film with the French foreign legion. They seem like nice guys.

The elevator is 5€ and gives you a superb view. I'm a local and got jaw dropped by it, I think it's worth it.
