Breathtaking! Linger behind your group out of the mangroves. Your paddles and kayak light up the water and fish swimming nearby are like lazy lightning through the water..to the tune of chirping coqui

Go kayaking in Misquito Bay at night where the water it is completely lit up by living organisms underneath. Read more to find out other great locations to experience bioluminescence to the fullest! Read more

Don't worry about bringing a camera. It is almost impossible to take photos of the bioluminescence. Instead, use your time instead to tour around the bay to find the best places to see the phenomena

Last time w/ the same guides, had a great time. This time, bioluminesence was significantly diminished & boarding our kayaks meant wading in sludge. Would have been tolerable had I known in advance.

The dinoflagellates and stars are amazing. That is 10-15 min of the 2+ hrs. You don't go that far, it's just dark and chaotic paddling through the canal. I'd spend the $ for a private group next time.

IO Puerto Rico Eco Tours is an amazing guide. Much funnier and more engaging than the other tours. No web site, but 787-616-9594 or (787) 613- 3928 or email them at ioprecotour@gmail.com

Try to get a departure just before low tide. Paddling is much easier, and the bioluminescence will follow you out through the mangroves towards the ocean when you're done.

This is very cool. Take the kids and go late at night, It is very dark and a lot of paddling but you can do it. Great experience. Where water shoes and a swim suit.

bring extra set of clothes & shoes (shoes & bottoms will get wet). FYI: mosquito spray, kayak pile ups, single file line, stay on right, watch out for mangroves smacking your face, strong arms!

Totally worth it. Prepare yourself to paddle as a team through a dark narrow inlet with only the light of the kayak ahead of you to guide you.

Do an earlier tour so you can see the mangroves and also have a better sense of direction navigating through the narrow lagoon. It will be dark on the way back so you get two vantage points.

Say hello to the chill Puerto Rican dogs hanging out at the beach right before your mind is blown from seeing the glowing awesomeness in the bay!

Must do if you're within 50 miles of Fajardo. Such an indescribable phenomena, water glows like a leaky glow stick when disturbed!
  • Sheba K.
Use lots of bug spray. Relax , the water while passing through the mangroves is only two feet deep. It doesn't sound scary kayaking at night once you know that :-)

Pure Adventure was a good kayak tour provider. Get an Ocean kayak if possible; they are a bit more stable.

Try to stay in either the front of the group or back to avoid kayak pile ups in the mangroves, you are not "really" allowed to swim in the bay but if you do it quietly they will not say anything.

Never go out when the 🌙 is beaming, u won’t see anything unless they cover u with a tarp. The whole bioluminescent experience is about 5 min the rest of the 2 hrs is slow kayaking
